A fairly new web hosting product is the VPS or Virtual Private Server. Server Virtualization has been around since the very late 90’s, but the products started entering main stream about 3-4 years ago (2005/2006). But what exactly is a VPS? A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is the simulation of hardware by a host or server operating system. This virtual environment provides the foundation that allows to run another operating system on top of it. In easier terms you could say that one server operating system is piggybacking on another one. The servers share the same hardware, but the VPS will see only so-called virtual hardware that the host operating system presents to it. In the end all this really means to you is that a physical server provides resources to more than one operating system while those are running in parallel.

Each virtual server account is completely isolated from the others running on the same physical server, and access to hardware resources (RAM, CPU, Disk Space, Network throughput) is managed by the physical server and the management software it runs. So, for instance, a virtual server may have 1GB RAM, 20GB of disk space, and 2 x 1.86GHz processors presented to it from the host server even though the physical server actually has 8GB RAM, 4 x 1.86GHz CPUs and 2 TB of disk space. It is not uncommon to have a virtualization ration of 1:30 or even more. Depending on the VPS software that’s used on the host machine, each VPS can either share hardware resources, or have guaranteed access to a specific amount of RAM, disk space, or CPU.

Most VPS plans today are hosted on either Linux or FreeBSD, but they do also exist in the Windows world. The costs of Windows VPS plans tend to be significantly more expensive than their Linux counterparts, but that’s not to say they’re not suitable in specific situations. A web host we found that provides very solid VPS setups for customers is Liquidweb.

If you are in the market for VPS Hosting, you might want to look at Lunarpages. I have been familiar with Lunarpages on the shared web hosting site for a long time and have sent many friends and even some family members their way, but I never really looked at their VPS Web Hosting offerings. But then suddenly I needed something more powerful compared to a shared web hosting account, but did not really had the urge to get a dedicated server. The VPS hosting solution came to mind and I checked a couple of web hosts I always use first due to being very satisfied with them.

Liquidweb is usually my first choice for a VPS account, but for whatever reason I did not stop there and looked at Lunarpages. First of all I have to congratulate them for the redesign of their website. The new design looks awesome. Then I have to admit I like the VPS account details:

Price: $39.95 per month
Setup: Free
RAM: 512 MB
Disk: 20000 MB
Bandwidth: 1000 GB
Guarantees: 30 Day Money Back

There are a couple more options you can pick to upgrade the account like a management package which takes away many of the system administrator burdens from you. Or you can add an extra backup solution, too. Overall the package looks extremely competitive and should be considered by you as an alternative to what you might have seen somewhere else. If you are familiar with Lunarpages, you know you are in good hands with them.

Visit Lunarpages to check out their VPS web hosting solution.
